Tom Haszard, Director of Fire Services
Tom leads the national fire services portfolio, as well as chairs BGIS’ national fire centre of excellence. He has strong experience managing complex, highly regulated environments across large, mission critical portfolios, with a strong focus on assurance, performance and client risk. Tom sets national standards for service delivery, governance and innovation, ensuring consistent outcomes for clients.
Paul Hanlon, National Risk & Compliance Lead
Paul brings more than 30 years’ experience across high-risk fire protection environments. Within the Centre of Excellence, Paul leads regulatory interpretation, licence governance, audit frameworks and national compliance assurance. He ensures service delivery models are aligned with statutory, regulatory and Australian Standard requirements, while remaining practical and deliverable at site level.
Mario Apela, General Manager, AESM
Mario is a highly respected fire services practitioner with over 30 years’ industry experience and more than two decades leading Australian Essential Services Maintenance. A registered building practitioner and A-grade electrician, he brings field-based technical knowledge across essential fire services.
David Nuttall, General Manager, Blue Fire Systems
David is a senior fire industry leader with more than 30 years of experience across design, installation, commissioning and lifecycle management of complex fire detection and suppression systems. Having led Blue Fire Systems for over 23 years, David brings strong expertise across fire detection, EWIS, VESDA and gaseous suppression technologies, underpinned by strong commercial and governance discipline.
James Norman, Managing Director, Fire Services Queensland
James has more than 25 years’ fire industry experience spanning inspection, testing, maintenance, defect rectification and project delivery. As founder of Fire Services Queensland, he has built a strong reputation for technical rigour, workforce capability and consistent service delivery in regulated environments.
Dean Richards, Fire Division Manager, HIX
Dean brings more than 25 years’ experience across wet fire, dry fire, passive fire and mechanical fire and smoke control systems. As a senior operational leader, he is responsible for regional delivery assurance, workforce capability and compliance oversight. He ensures national fire governance frameworks are effectively translated into consistent day‑to‑day service delivery, balancing statutory compliance with operational practicality.
